The #1 Thing I Look for in Wedding Day Photo Locations (Atlanta Guide)

When couples imagine their wedding photos, they usually think about the backdrop.

A beautiful venue.
A stunning view.
A perfectly styled space.

But here’s the truth:

The most important thing I look for in any photo location…
isn’t the background.

It’s the light.

Why Lighting Matters More Than Location

You could be standing in front of the most beautiful backdrop in Atlanta…

But if the light is harsh, uneven, or spotty—
it can create:

  • Strong shadows

  • Squinting eyes

  • Uneven skin tones

And ultimately… photos you don’t love.

On the other hand, even a simple location can look incredible with the right light.

What I Look for When Choosing Photo Locations

This is what’s going through my head all day as I guide you.

1. Open Shade (My Favorite)

If the sun is high in the sky—which is very common during Atlanta wedding days—I’m always looking for open shade.

This gives us:

  • Soft, even light across your faces

  • No harsh shadows

  • A clean, natural look

Think:

  • The side of a building

  • Under a tree line (with even coverage)

  • Covered walkways or porches

2. Backlighting (When Shade Isn’t Available)

If we can’t find shade, I’ll position you with the sun behind you.

This allows:

  • Your faces to stay softly lit

  • The background to glow

  • A more romantic, dimensional look

You might see me moving around, adjusting angles, or squinting a bit—
I’m making sure the light hits just right without flaring the lens.

3. Avoiding “Spotty Light”

This is one of the biggest things I’m constantly watching for.

Spotty light happens when:

  • Sunlight filters unevenly through trees

  • Parts of your face are in sun, parts in shade

It’s distracting and hard to correct.

So even if a location is “pretty,” I’ll move you slightly to keep your light clean and even.

Trust the Process

Sometimes the best photo spot won’t look like much at first glance.

And sometimes I’ll place you in a spot that doesn’t seem obvious.

But I promise—there’s a reason.

Because I’m not just choosing a background…
I’m choosing how you’ll look and feel in your photos.

A Final Thought

Great wedding photos aren’t about perfect locations.

They’re about:

  • Beautiful light

  • Real moments

  • And being fully present in your day

When those things come together, everything else falls into place.
